Do I Need a Category BE Licence?

It depends on the Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) of your vehicle and trailer.

A standard Category B driving licence allows you to tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 750 kg.

You may also tow a trailer with a MAM greater than 750 kg on a Category B licence, provided the combined MAM of the towing vehicle and trailer does not exceed 3,500 kg.

If you need to tow a heavier vehicle and trailer combination, you may need additional licence entitlement.

A Category BE licence allows you to drive a Category B towing vehicle with a trailer where the trailer has a MAM of up to 3,500 kg.

This makes Category BE particularly relevant for people towing larger trailers for work, farming, equestrian activities, construction, vehicle transport and leisure.

What Does MAM Mean?

MAM means Maximum Authorised Mass.

It is the maximum weight at which the vehicle or trailer is legally permitted to operate when fully loaded.

This is important because your driving licence entitlement is based on authorised weights rather than simply what your trailer happens to weigh when empty.

You must also stay within the towing capacity specified for your towing vehicle.

Category B, Code 96 or Category BE?

Understanding the difference can help you determine which entitlement you need.

Category B

A Category B licence generally allows you to tow:

  • A trailer with a MAM of no more than 750 kg; or
  • A trailer over 750 kg where the combined MAM of the towing vehicle and trailer does not exceed 3,500 kg.

Category B with Code 96

Code 96 extends Category B entitlement for certain larger vehicle and trailer combinations.

It permits a Category B vehicle to tow a trailer over 750 kg where the combined MAM exceeds 3,500 kg but does not exceed 4,250 kg.

Category BE

Category BE covers a Category B towing vehicle combined with a trailer where the trailer’s MAM does not exceed 3,500 kg.

Your actual vehicle and trailer must still be legally compatible. The towing capacity of the vehicle, trailer limits and other applicable weight restrictions must always be observed.

How to Get a Category BE Licence in Ireland

If you want to obtain your Category BE driving licence, there are several steps to complete.
1. Hold a Full Category B Driving Licence.
You must already hold a full, valid Category B driving licence before progressing to Category BE.

2. Meet the Theory Test Requirement
You must previously have passed the Category B car and light van theory test before applying for a Category BE learner permit.
If you received your first Category B learner permit before the introduction of the theory test on 25 April 2001, you may need to complete a theory test before applying for your BE learner permit.

3. Get Your Category BE Learner Permit
Once you meet the requirements, you can apply for a Category BE learner permit.
This allows you to learn to drive the relevant car or light van and trailer combination.
When learning on public roads, you cannot drive on motorways and you must be accompanied by someone who has held a full, valid driving licence in the same category for more than two years.

4. Take Category BE Trailer Driving Lessons
Professional lessons help you learn the techniques needed to handle a vehicle and trailer safely while also preparing for the practical driving test.
T&S Training tailors lessons to your existing towing experience.

5. Take Your Category BE Driving Test
The Category BE test is a full practical driving test.
It assesses much more than your ability to reverse a trailer.
The test takes approximately 50 minutes and assesses your knowledge of road rules as well as your ability to control and drive the vehicle and trailer safely.
It also includes trailer reversing and uncoupling and recoupling the trailer.

6. Apply for Your Full Category BE Licence
After passing your test, you will receive a certificate of competency.
The certificate is valid for up to two years. You must apply to have the Category BE entitlement added to your full driving licence within this period.
