What Is a Category C Truck Licence?
A Category C driving licence is the licence category commonly associated with rigid trucks and heavy goods vehicles, also known as HGVs.
It covers vehicles with a maximum authorised mass greater than 3,500 kg, designed to carry no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver. You can also tow a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of up to 750 kg.
Maximum authorised mass, or MAM, means the maximum permitted weight of a vehicle when loaded.

What Do You Need Before Starting Category C Lessons?
Before taking practical Category C lessons on public roads, you need a valid Category C learner permit.
To begin the application process, you must hold a full, valid Category B car driving licence, meet the applicable medical requirements and pass the relevant truck theory test.
The minimum age for Category C is 21, or 18 with Driver CPC, subject to the applicable qualification requirements.

Do You Need Driver CPC?
Driver CPC stands for Driver Certificate of Professional Competence. It is generally required for professional truck driving and bus driving, although exemptions apply to certain activities.
Your Category C licence establishes your entitlement to drive the vehicle category. Driver CPC is an additional professional qualification.
Starting as a Professional Truck Driver
New professional drivers generally complete the initial CPC qualification process, including the theory, case study, practical driving and walkaround tests.
Maintaining Your Driver CPC
